  • NEW HERE NEED HELP WITH SHORT PROBLEM ON AIR HANDLER

    Hello,

New here. Thomas from Florida. I was installing new thermostat and caused a short while doing it as I forget to turn off the power wiring. I didn’t have a breaker in the line on the R so I replaced the transformer (and put in breaker relay in the line) since it didn’t hold current on the 24v side and replaced the fan relay as well. I also installed new run capacitor since my unit is a RUDD 18 year old air handler with no board (all collectively costing me less than dollars for all OEM Ruud parts). I can jump the red with the yellow at the thermostat site and shoots out cold air and same with red and white with heat but when I do it with red and green (fan) it shorts and pops my inline breaker. I tried switching to the blue line in the thermostat wires to rule out if it was a bad green wire but it still shorts with the green to the air handler. Seeing if this is just wiring needing to be replaced as this air handler is pretty simple. Just can not find this short when green and red jump. Any help would be appreciated as I’m about to just replace the green wire throughout.

  • Moved to AOP, this is the homeowner section. Please note new location.

Also removed pricing, that is not allowed per site rules.

  • ThatÂ’s a lot of parts. Maybe call someone qualified?

  • Did you try replacing the evaporator coil?

  • I read where you shorted the control wires, I didn’t read where you tested to see what if anything was damaged. Then I read where you replaced a bunch of cheap parts, which from reading your account is where the short started.

You say that R-Y shoots out cold air but R-G kicks the breaker. R-Y should kick out no cold air as the blower is not energized through Y.

It sounds like you need someone to go through all your wiring to see where things went wrong.
